The Hypocrisy of Tom Steyer in American Politics

Tom Steyer has garnered a reputation in American politics, often labeled as one of the greatest hypocrites in the sphere. His political aspirations are marred by a glaring contradiction: voters can see through his façade.

A Disastrous Presidential Run

During the 2020 Presidential campaign, Steyer faced a notable setback in South Carolina, where a significant portion of the Democratic primary electorate is Black. Despite hiring Black political consultants, sharing stages with popular rappers, and spending millions on advertisements, he only managed to secure 11.3% of the vote, finishing third behind Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. The results starkly highlighted his disconnect with the very demographic he aimed to connect with.

The Climate Change Advocate with Fossil Fuel Roots

Steyer’s political platform has heavily focused on climate change. Paradoxically, his wealth was amassed from fossil fuel investments. In 2014, he manipulated his financial resources to instigate a fake Senate filibuster, aimed at raising awareness about climate issues. Critics point out the irony of a billionaire who made his fortune in coal, oil, and gas industries now vehemently opposing them. As noted by City Journal, “Steyer, the former CEO of the Farallon investment firm, made much of his fortune from the coal, oil, and gas industries that he now targets.”

Recent comments from Steyer indicate a rising fervor against fossil fuels, claiming they are to blame for numerous societal issues. Recently, he adopted a familiar tactic from California Governor Gavin Newsom by accusing oil companies of “profiteering off” the Iran war, despite a lack of evidence supporting such claims. Instead, California’s gas prices remain high due to stringent regulatory policies like special blends and cap-and-trade programs, shrouded in the green agenda promoted by Steyer himself.

The Dilemma of Private Prisons

Adding to his list of contradictions is Steyer’s investment in private prisons. While this issue did not surface prominently during his presidential bid, it has gained significance amid the growing scrutiny of the Black Lives Matter movement. Notably, one of the companies in which he invested operates California’s largest immigration detention center—a sensitive topic for any Democratic candidate in the state.

In an attempt to counter this public relations hurdle, Steyer now promises to abolish ICE, illustrating his pattern of espousing progressive policies that starkly contrast his historical financial activities.

A New Tax Strategy

In the context of California’s shifting political landscape, where Democrats are increasingly critical of the wealthy elite, Steyer has recently suggested a 5% wealth tax. This move could be seen as an effort to align more closely with party sentiments while addressing his own wealthy status.

While recent polls indicated that Steyer leads the gubernatorial race with around 21% of the vote—especially following Eric Swalwell’s political missteps—this may stem from the extensive advertising budget he commands.

Conclusion: A Glaring Disconnection

While California voters lean liberal, they are not easily deceived. The complexities of Tom Steyer’s political journey illuminate the challenges and contradictions faced by a billionaire-turned-populist in today’s political climate. As he navigates pressures from various factions within the Democratic Party, the question remains whether he can truly connect with voters who are increasingly skeptical of insincerity in political discourse.
