Northern California Weather Forecast: Foggy Mornings and Hazy Afternoons

Overview of Current Conditions

Northern California is experiencing a continuation of its weather pattern characterized by thicker morning fog and hazy afternoons, a result of persistent high pressure hanging over the region. The notorious fog has settled in earlier today, reducing visibility to as low as a quarter mile in Sacramento, with smog adding to the gritty atmosphere. The air quality remains a concern, especially in the Valley, where it has been deemed unhealthy due to stagnant air holding on to accumulated pollution.

Evening Update from Sacramento

As night falls in Sacramento, temperatures have dropped into the 40s, signaling a chilly evening ahead. The fog is notably thicker than yesterday, particularly in Rancho Cordova along I-80, where visibility issues are evident. Further north, Yuba City is experiencing some haze, with similar conditions reported in Stockton and Modesto. Unfortunately, winds are whisper-quiet, averaging between 0-3 mph, failing to clear the layers of smog blanketing the area.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

Short-Term Forecast

The current high-pressure system is expected to dominate through the weekend and into early next week, keeping temperatures mild but also contributing to the stability of fog conditions. Daytime highs on Sunday are forecasted to reach the upper 50s in the Valley, with the foothills seeing temperatures rise into the low 60s and the Sierra peaking in the low 50s. Residents can expect sunny afternoons, though air quality, due to ongoing pollution, continues to be a concern.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Insights

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the weather is forecasted to remain pleasant. Expect similar temperature readings, with highs expected to reach the upper 50s. While conditions should be mostly dry, morning fog and hazy afternoons will linger.

Mid-Week Changes

A weak weather system is anticipated to roll in from the northwest by Thursday. This could bring a brief respite from the foggy and hazy conditions. A slight cool-down and light breezes are expected to help clear out some of the accumulated fog and improve air quality temporarily. Mountain showers could develop on Thursday and Friday, adding moisture to the forecast but likely not changing the prevailing weather overall.

Summary of Conditions Ahead

  • Mornings: Expect thick fog, particularly in low-lying areas.
  • Afternoons: Hazy skies with reduced air quality; sunny breaks become possible.
  • Temperature Range: Valley highs reaching the upper 50s, while foothills bask in low 60s.
  • Midweek Changes: A disturbance could improve visibility and air quality starting Thursday.
