Dungeness Crab Fishery in Humboldt County Opens After Delay
The recreational Dungeness crab fishery in Humboldt County has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone after a prior delay caused by elevated levels of domoic acid. This development comes as a great relief to local fishermen eager to cast their nets once again.
Fishery Opening Details
State health agencies have confirmed that Dungeness crab can now be harvested from waters stretching from the southern boundary of the Reading Rock Marine Protected Area (41° 17.6’ N. latitude) to Cape Mendocino (40° 10.0’ N. latitude). However, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a crucial health advisory. Fishermen and consumers are advised to avoid eating crab viscera (the guts) and ensure that any crab is thoroughly cleaned prior to cooking. For further information regarding health guidelines, visit CDPH.
Compliance and Regulations
Following the recommendations outlined by state health authorities, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has declared the recreational Dungeness crab fishery open in the previously delayed area. It is important to note that in order to minimize the risk of entanglement for whales, crab fishing in this area is currently permitted only through the use of hoop nets, crab snares, or by hand. This restriction is in accordance with the designated trap prohibition in RAMP Fishing Zone 1. Effective January 2, 2026, at 8:01 a.m., these restrictions will be lifted, enabling the use of all recreational fishing gear statewide.
Upcoming Commercial Fishery Openings
As the recreational fishery opens, the commercial Dungeness crab fishery in the Central Management Area will commence on January 5, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. This season will operate under a 40% trap reduction to mitigate entanglement risk for humpback whales. This reduction is designed to decrease the number of vertical lines in the water, enhancing the safety of marine life.
In contrast, the Dungeness crab season in the Northern Management Area (from the California/Oregon border at 42° N. latitude to the Sonoma/Mendocino County line) remains delayed. This delay is due to ongoing assessments of meat quality, stymied by high levels of domoic acid. Provided the forthcoming results of further testing are satisfactory, the season is slated to open on January 15, 2026, at 12:01 a.m. under a 15% trap reduction.
