Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Potential Flood Risks for Southern California

Key Information on Upcoming Storm

Southern California is bracing for significant rainfall starting Thursday evening, with forecasts indicating severe weather conditions through the weekend. Residents are advised to stay vigilant due to the potential for flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas affected by recent wildfires.

Storm Forecast Timeline

Here’s a detailed timeline for the upcoming storm:

  • Thursday Afternoon: Light, isolated showers commence.
  • Thursday Evening to Friday Morning: Expect heavier rain, with an increased risk of flooding and debris flows.
  • Friday Afternoon: Transition to light to moderate rainfall.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Showers are expected to linger throughout the weekend.

Flood Watches and Evacuation Warnings

Evacuation warnings are currently in place for communities near recent fire burn scars, particularly in locations like the Eaton Fire area in Altadena and the Palisades, Hurst, and Sunset fire zones. Residents are urged to prepare for possible evacuation orders due to the heightened risk of flooding and mudslides.

Flood watches are issued for parts of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties, extending from Friday night to Saturday evening.

Snow and Rainfall Estimates

Rainfall estimates are projected as follows:

  • Coastal Areas/Valleys: Anticipate 1 to 2 inches of rain.
  • Mountains/Foothills: Expected rainfall of 2 to 4 inches.

As for snowfall, snow levels will start at 8,000 feet and lower to 6,000 feet by Thursday night into Friday, with a few inches possible at resort levels.

California’s Drought Situation

As of mid-November, around half of California is currently drought-free. However, moderate to severe drought conditions persist in pockets of Southern California. Recent reports indicate that 9% of the state remains in severe drought, primarily affecting parts of Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. For a complete overview, refer to the Drought Monitor update.

Road Closures and Travel Information

In response to the severe weather, Caltrans will close Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive starting at 10 p.m. Thursday. This closure is expected to last at least throughout Friday morning, possibly extending into the weekend, depending on the storm’s impact.

Conclusion

Residents are encouraged to take precautions as Southern California prepares for substantial rainfall and potential flooding. Stay updated with local weather forecasts and heed evacuation warnings where applicable to ensure safety during this stormy weekend.
