Southern California Braces for Major Storm: Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Risks Ahead

Local authorities in Southern California are gearing up for a significant storm system that is expected to deliver heavy rainfall and pose flooding threats to burn scar areas by Thursday night. In light of this incoming weather event, officials are implementing several precautionary measures, including evacuation warnings and road closures across the region.

Storm Forecast and Impacts

According to the National Weather Service, a low-pressure system is set to bring moderate to heavy rainfall from Thursday evening through Saturday, potentially extending into early next week. Rainfall accumulations are projected to reach 1-3 inches in many urban regions, while mountain and foothill communities could see totals of 2-5 inches. Residents should prepare for the storm to begin late Thursday evening, continuing into the early morning hours of Friday.

Along with rain, temperatures will drop, with coastal and valley areas expected to see highs primarily in the 60s. A CBS LA Next Weather Alert will take effect Thursday night, remaining in place until Saturday.

Evacuation Warnings in Los Angeles

To mitigate risks associated with debris flows, the City of Los Angeles has issued an evacuation warning from 6 p.m. Thursday to 11 a.m. Sunday. Residents living in high-risk zones—identified as LFD-1081, LFD-1083, and several others—are advised to prepare for possible evacuations. The Los Angeles Police Department will conduct door-to-door visits in these areas for further guidance.

Ventura County officials currently do not have evacuation orders in place, but this is subject to change based on evolving weather conditions.

Road Closures and Traffic Updates

In advance of the storm, Caltrans has announced the closure of Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the Palisades Fire Zone. This road will be shut down beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday along a 3.6-mile stretch between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive, remaining closed until conditions improve.

Sandbag Distribution for Residents

To help local residents prepare for potential flooding, Los Angeles County Public Works is offering temporary sandbag distribution sites, open through April 15, 2026. Locations include:

  • LA County Public Works Fleet Maintenance Yard: 252 Mountain View St., Altadena, CA 91001
  • Malibu Library Parking Lot: 23519 West Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265

Residents must provide proof of residency when requesting sandbags. Additionally, free ready-to-fill sandbags are available year-round at all LAFD Fire Stations.

Conclusion

Southern California is facing a substantial storm that may result in hazardous conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed all warnings and advisories from local officials. Ensure safety by preparing your home for potential flooding and understanding evacuation procedures.
