Central Coast Weather Update: Warm January with No Rain in Sight

The Central Coast of California is experiencing a weather pattern dominated by an Eastern Pacific High pressure system, maintaining a steady influence over the area. This high-pressure system, positioned off the Central California coast, is expected to direct storm activity toward the Pacific Northwest, resulting in dry conditions for the Central Coast, likely lasting until early February.

January Weather Recap

Residents might have noticed that this January was notably warmer than usual. San Luis Obispo recorded an average temperature of 56.6°F, which is 3.8°F above its historical average of 52.8°F. For context, the warmest January on record for this area occurred in 2003, where the average temperature peaked at 59.2°F.

Other locations in the region also reflected this warmth:

  • Santa Maria Airport recorded an average of 54.8°F, surpassing the typical average by 3.2°F.
  • Paso Robles experienced milder temperatures, coming in at 1.5°F above its historical average of 48.1°F.

However, the warmth didn’t translate to moisture. Rainfall totals for January were significantly below average:

  • Paso Robles saw just 1.26 inches of rain, which is less than half of its historical average.
  • Santa Maria Airport reported 1.84 inches, falling short of its typical 2.74 inches.
  • San Luis Obispo Regional Airport recorded 2.32 inches, well below the normal 3.86 inches for January.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

Looking ahead, a dry cold front is expected to move into the Central Coast, bringing fresh northwesterly winds ranging from 19 to 31 mph. Coastal areas will likely experience marine low clouds, while mid- to high-level clouds will spread across the region. Northeasterly winds will moderate in the afternoons, giving way to predominantly clear skies.

Temperature Outlook

Nighttime temperatures will drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s in inland valleys, including Santa Ynez, while coastal valleys such as Santa Maria and Lompoc will experience lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Meanwhile, daytime highs are forecasted to reach into the low to mid-70s, with Santa Ynez potentially hitting the low 80s midweek.

As for precipitation, forecasts indicate no rain in the immediate future. Gale-force northwesterly winds are anticipated later next week, but the dry spell is expected to continue.

Surf Conditions

Surf enthusiasts can expect a varied swell over the upcoming days:

  • Sunday: 6- to 8-foot northwesterly swell.
  • Monday: Increasing to 8- to 10 feet.
  • Tuesday to Wednesday: A 5- to 7-foot swell develops.
  • Thursday to Saturday: Anticipating a 7- to 9-foot westerly swell.

Seawater temperatures are hovering between 58 and 60 degrees but are set to drop to 57 to 59 degrees next weekend.

Weather Historical Insights

Looking back at weather events on this day in history:

  • 1893: Thunderstorms brought snow and sleet to St. Louis, MO, with temperatures around 13°F.
  • 1951: A major ice storm affected the United States, resulting in substantial damages and casualties.
  • 2016: High-pressure systems led to significant winds and rainfall across the Central Coast region.

For continuous updates on weather conditions, be sure to check local forecasts.
