Laguna Niguel Man Arrested After Crashing into Electrical Utility Box and Fire Hydrant

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA — A significant incident unfolded early Friday morning in Murrieta when 22-year-old Johney Pool, a resident of Laguna Niguel, was involved in a crash that resulted in widespread electrical outages.

Accident Details

At approximately 4:30 a.m., Pool was driving a white truck when he collided with an electrical transformer and sheared off a fire hydrant. This collision sent a dramatic spout of water soaring into the air, affecting both the sidewalk and roadway near Prestige Golf Carts and the SRCAR building.

Local authorities, including the Murrieta Police Department and Murrieta Fire & Rescue, responded swiftly to the scene. Fire personnel managed the situation by addressing the ruptured fire hydrant and assessing the overall damage.

DUI Arrest and Medical Clearance

According to Sgt. Matt Schmidt from the Murrieta Police, Johney Pool was arrested at the scene and suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). Following the incident, he was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Once cleared, he was booked into the Southwest Detention Center.

Pool is scheduled to make a court appearance on May 15 to face charges stemming from the crash. The charges include various DUI-related offenses as well as property damage.

Impact on Local Businesses

The crash caused immediate electrical outages in the area, affecting 216 businesses and customers in the South Murrieta Business Corridor, which stretches between I-215 and Adams Avenue. Southern California Edison quickly deployed repair crews, who arrived by 7 a.m. to restore power. The outage was anticipated to last until at least 10 a.m. according to the SoCal Edison outage map.

For more information on the electrical service disruptions, you can check the Southern California Edison outage map for updates.

Continued Updates

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available regarding both the crash and the ongoing power restoration efforts.

Stay tuned for additional details on this developing story.
