The Rise of Braids by Gabbi: Celebrating Diversity in Hair Artistry
CHICO — Located in the vibrant community of Chico, California, Braids by Gabbi has quickly made a name for itself as one of the premier braiding salons in the area. Founded by Gabbi Pasha in 2021, this establishment brings a unique blend of personal experience and cultural passion to the realm of contemporary hairstyling.
A Journey Rooted in Identity
Gabbi Pasha’s journey into the world of hair braiding began in her childhood in Atlanta, Georgia, a city rich with Black culture and traditions. As one of ten children raised by a single white mother, Pasha often found herself admiring the beautiful braids adorned by her peers at school while grappling with her own biracial hair, which she affectionately describes as a “nappy curly fro.”
Her longing to fit in fuelled her determination to master the art of braiding. Armed with patience and creativity, she spent countless hours in front of the mirror honing her skills. By middle school, she was confident enough to style her own hair for special occasions like picture day.
Bridging Cultures in a New Environment
When Pasha moved to Chico in 2016, she encountered a cultural void as there were no braiding salons in sight. Seeing a significant need for the service, she began offering braiding as a side hustle from her garage while balancing various jobs and single motherhood. Pasha soon transitioned from various call center roles to focusing entirely on her growing business.
Building a Thriving Salon
In 2021, after substantial success operating out of her garage, Pasha opened her storefront on Mangrove Avenue. Her break came when a feature by KRCR caught the public’s attention, making her business a local sensation.
“It’s the best decision I could have ever made,” asserts Pasha, relishing her full-time role as a business owner. “I don’t really have slow days.”
A Space for Empowerment and Expression
Gabbi Pasha’s vision goes beyond the aesthetic; it’s about uplifting women and enhancing self-esteem through artistry. Whether it’s braiding the hair of a child or a senior, she finds joy in making clients feel confident and beautiful.
One poignant story involves a client dealing with hair loss. Pasha instinctively braided the client’s hair to cover the spots, and when the client later returned in tears, her heartfelt gratitude touched Pasha deeply. “Being able to boost someone’s confidence just by doing art is magical to me,” she expresses.
Embracing Diversity in Braiding
Pasha’s policy is inclusive; she braids hair for people of all ages and races, despite facing occasional backlash for working with non-Black clients. She feels passionately about breaking the stereotypes around braiding, especially since she herself has a mixed background, having been born to a Black father and a white mother.
“I do not discriminate when it comes to anything—race, gender, or age. I want everyone to feel included,” says Pasha, as she recounts moments with her diverse clientele.
Future Aspirations: Expanding the Vision
Five years into her entrepreneurial journey, Gabbi Pasha is exploring further avenues to expand her business. She plans to utilize additional space within her salon for selling beauty products and possibly offering classes in braiding techniques. “I want Braids by Gabbi to be a one-stop shop,” she envisions, reminiscing about the all-encompassing beauty supply stores in her hometown of Atlanta.
With a commitment to education and empowerment, she aims to inspire the next generation of braiders through classes, both in-person and virtual.
