Main Street Minute: Legislative Updates and Upcoming Events for Small Businesses (March 30 – April 3)

Welcome to the latest edition of the Main Street Minute, where we provide small businesses in California with important legislative updates and upcoming events.

Legislative Spring Break

The California legislature is currently on Spring Break and will reconvene on April 6, allowing lawmakers a brief respite from their busy schedules.

Advocating for Small Businesses

Recent days have been particularly active for small business advocacy. State Director John Kabateck attended vital round-table discussions on legislative matters alongside the CalAsian Chamber of Commerce and the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. Kabateck also shared insights on NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index at an event hosted by the Sacramento Business Journal.

Policy Director Tim Taylor highlighted small business concerns during a March 25 press conference focused on affordability, which was attended by multiple assembly members. Learn more here.

Legislation for Healthy Foods

Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel from Encino has introduced AB 2244, aiming to create a new classification for healthy foods called “California Certified.” Similar to the USDA Organic label, this initiative seeks to provide food manufacturers with a way to certify their products as healthy, effective from 2028. The criteria include avoiding classifications of ‘ultra-processed’ foods, which are high in substances like fat, salt, or sugar. For more detailed information, visit The Sacramento Bee.

Ballot Initiative Progress

As the April 17 deadline approaches for ballot measures, momentum continues to build. Tom Ross, President and CEO of Swing Strategies, reported the following updates:

  • 28 measures are cleared for circulation.
  • 13 measures have crossed the 25% signature threshold.
  • 3 measures are pending signature verification.
  • 3 measures have officially qualified for the ballot.

Join Tom Ross and Tino Rossi for an in-depth discussion on April 7 at 11:00 a.m. as they unpack the latest developments affecting the upcoming ballot. Register here.

Upcoming Small Business Leadership Day

We’re excited to invite you to the Small Business Leadership Day at the Capitol on May 4-5. This event includes:

  • May 4: Welcome networking reception and dinner.
  • May 5: Legislature meetings, main program, and wrap-up happy hour.

Rising Fuel Costs

Gas prices remain a significant concern for Californian consumers, with reports indicating prices reaching $8.71 per gallon in certain areas. For additional coverage, click here.

Insights from the Legal Industry

Contentious debt restructuring is becoming increasingly prevalent, paralleling lucrative trends in corporate law. This growing sector thrives on the complexity of financial negotiations, emphasizing the importance of legal expertise in today’s business landscape.
