The Impact of Generative AI on California’s Creative Economy

Understanding the Shift in Hollywood

In recent years, Hollywood has faced significant changes as it adapts to the growing demand for streaming entertainment. Major businesses have merged, leading to budget cuts, job losses, and in some instances, outsourcing overseas. This contraction coincided with the rise of generative AI technologies, like ChatGPT, which launched in 2022. During this year, Netflix and other companies also pivoted to prioritize profitability in their streaming models.

The Role of Generative AI

Despite the challenges, new research from the Otis College of Art and Design indicates that generative AI should not be blamed for the decline of California’s creative workforce. According to Patrick Adler, a co-author of the study, the pattern of job losses does not suggest that AI is displacing workers. Rather, it is transforming how creative work gets done.

Job Loss in the Creative Sector

The recent report, “Creative Disruption: AI and California’s Creative Economy: 2022–2025,” highlights a staggering 14% job reduction in California’s creative sectors between 2022 and 2025, translating to a loss of 114,000 jobs. Particularly hard-hit were the film, television, and sound industries, which experienced nearly a 30% job decrease, alongside traditional media, which saw a decline of about 34%.

Interestingly, positions most susceptible to AI—such as writers, software developers, and artists—have been growing in number, with increased job postings in these fields.

Contributing Factors to Job Loss

The report suggests that the declines in certain job sectors are not primarily due to AI, but rather a mix of cost-driven job losses, particularly in lower-paying roles, and structural changes affecting California more than the rest of the country. Additionally, many workers in lower-income jobs have relocated due to high living costs.

The Current Use of AI in the Creative Industries

The good news is that generative AI is currently being used to replace specific tasks rather than entire jobs. The research emphasizes that there are no instances reported where AI has completely replaced a workflow or job role. For example, in postproduction for film and television, AI has been effectively used for tasks such as rotoscoping but struggles when it comes to creative decision-making.

Fascinatingly, the need to check AI outputs often results in additional workload for human employees, contradicting the cost-saving potential initially anticipated.

Agency of Creative Workers

Creative professionals have significant influence over the adoption and application of generative AI tools in their fields. While some workers embrace the technology, others express skepticism regarding its capabilities. Ethical considerations regarding AI use also surfaced during interviews, with some employees choosing to conceal their use of AI out of fear of being deemed expendable.

Changing Nature of Creative Work

While generative AI is not displacing jobs, it is reshaping the creative work landscape. Increased expectations for productivity and a dependency on AI tools over human input are part of the new reality. Some creative workers describe pressure to produce lower-quality work under the mantra, “It’s good enough,” highlighting concerns about declining standards.

Recommendations for Creative Organizations

To ensure smoother integration of AI tools, the report suggests that creative organizations should address worker concerns and avoid rushed implementations. Policies that prevent layoffs can foster an atmosphere of experimentation, where employees are more likely to engage with AI technologies.

In summary, trust plays a crucial role in the successful adoption of AI within creative fields. By cultivating an environment of transparency and support, organizations can facilitate a more effective transition into the next era of creative work driven by AI.
