Sudden Weather Shift in Southern California: A Warm-Up Followed by Rain

Southern California is in for a dramatic change in weather this week as temperatures swing from a brief warm-up to a significant cooling trend accompanied by increasing rain chances.

Warm Temperatures Expected Midweek

According to the National Weather Service, residents can expect a warming trend to peak on Wednesday, with inland areas reaching temperatures approximately 10 degrees above average. This brief period of elevated temperatures follows an unseasonably warm stretch during March and early April, which resulted in record-high readings and heightened fire risks due to Santa Ana winds.

Cooling Trend on the Horizon

Post-Wednesday, a shift in weather patterns will usher in cooler temperatures extending through Sunday. Forecasts indicate highs could drop to as much as 10 to 15 degrees below average in higher mountain regions and parts of the inland valleys. This dramatic change emphasizes the volatility of spring weather in Southern California.

Rain Chances Begin Friday

Forecasters anticipate that a low-pressure system will roll in late Friday, ramping up the chances for rain into Saturday. The weather agency estimates around 80% likelihood of precipitation across the region for the weekend, which could also include a slight chance of thunderstorms. While rainfall totals are still uncertain, mountain areas may see accumulations of an inch or more. Coastal regions are expected to receive lighter amounts.

Winds and Snow Forecast

In addition to rain, gusty southwest to west winds between 35 to 45 mph are forecasted for mountain and desert areas on Thursday and Friday. Snow levels are expected to drop significantly—around 6,500 feet late Saturday and potentially descending to 6,000 feet by Sunday. This forecast opens the door for light snowfall at higher elevations.

What Lies Ahead

Looking forward, Southern California is expected to return to drier and warmer conditions early next week, providing relief after the wet weather spell.

For more weather updates, visit the National Weather Service for the latest forecasts and warnings. Keep an eye on your local news outlets for ongoing weather advisories as the weekend approaches.

This shifting weather pattern serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of springtime in the region. As always, it’s essential to stay informed about potential weather impacts, particularly if you have outdoor plans.
