Oklahoma Rugby Community Mourns the Loss of Bjorn ‘Bear’ Miller

The Oklahoma rugby community is in mourning following the tragic death of Bjorn “Bear” Miller, who lost his life in a fall from a cliff in California. Known for his selflessness and dedication, he is being remembered not only for his contributions to rugby but also for the profound impact he had on those around him.

Bjorn Miller’s Life and Legacy

Bjorn Miller was a cherished figure within Oklahoma’s rugby scene. His brother, Kelton Miller, shared, “He always put other people’s needs above his own,” highlighting Bjorn’s character and the love he had for his family and friends. The accident occurred shortly after he began a travel nursing job in California. Kelton described it as a “freak accident,” where Bjorn apparently stepped out for a moment, leading to a tragic fall.

A Pillar of the Rugby Community

Bjorn’s influence on the sport of rugby in Oklahoma extended far beyond just playing. Friends and former teammates remember him as a vital contributor to the sport’s growth, including youth programs and adult leagues. Brendan Berry, a close friend, noted, “He was the guy who would be the medic, the referee,” illustrating his multifaceted role in the community. “His impact is quite phenomenal,” Kelton added.

Honors and Events in Memory of Bjorn

To honor Bjorn Miller and his passion for rugby, the Bear Miller Memorial Rugby Alumni Match will take place in Stillwater this Saturday. The event is open to everyone, regardless of whether they’ve played rugby before. This open-armed invitation truly reflects the spirit of Bjorn, emphasizing community and togetherness.

A Combat Medic and A Lovable Bear

In addition to his rugby involvement, Bjorn served as a combat medic for the Oklahoma National Guard after training at Fort Sill. His nickname, “Bear,” has a deeper meaning; it is Scandinavian for Bjorn. “It’s almost like it manifested as he grew up,” Kelton remarked, encapsulating Bjorn’s larger-than-life persona.

Community Support and Resources

The community has rallied together to support Bjorn’s family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist, further uniting those who were touched by his kindness and dedication.

As the Oklahoma rugby community prepares to celebrate Bjorn’s legacy, they reflect on his commitment to others both on and off the pitch. The Bear Miller Memorial Rugby Alumni Match serves not only as a tribute to his life but also as an opportunity for friends, family, and newcomers to unite in honor of a true sportsman and compassionate individual.
