Healing Through the Feathers: Big Heart Ranch Hosts Community Wellness Day
A Refuge for Healing: Big Heart Ranch
On March 8, 2026, Big Heart Ranch nestled along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California, opened its gates to nearly 50 individuals from the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, as well as community members affected by the devastating Palisades fire that struck on January 7, 2025. This wellness center and sanctuary, home to rescued farm animals, specializes in providing emotional and psychological support to those coping with loss, stress, or trauma.
A Symbol of Resilience: Felix Koch and the Chickens
Among the attendees was seven-year-old Felix Koch, who quickly found his way to the chickens. The birds reminded him of a happier time in the family home before they lost everything in the fire, including his beloved pet chickens. His father, Arno Koch, shared, “He basically grew up with chickens. All his life, he was around chickens.” These connections between animals and emotional well-being are at the core of Big Heart Ranch’s mission.
From Tragedy to Triumph: The Role of Rescue Animals
Big Heart Ranch has become a beacon of hope, especially after the tragic events of the wildfires. The ranch not only rescued farm animals from abandonment but also stepped up during crises, including the L.A. County wildfires. This sanctuary features various animals such as horses, pigs, bunnies, goats, alpacas, and ducks, all of whom play an essential role in the healing process for visitors.
The Unique Healing Qualities of Animals
During the wellness event, the guests rotated through different stations, engaging with the animals and experiencing their unique healing traits. Denise Degarmo, Executive Director of Big Heart Ranch, explained how certain animals can sense energy and provide emotional comfort. For example, chickens have been known to offer a calming presence simply by sitting still on a person’s head.
The Heartwarming Stories of Rescued Animals
Among the success stories is the adorable Miss Piggy, a 100-pound miniature pig who was brought to the sanctuary after her family lost their home in the fires. Miss Piggy has become a symbol of love and connection for many visitors, illustrating the emotional bonds that can exist between humans and animals. Degarmo noted that pigs can die from broken hearts, emphasizing the deep connections that exist even among pet owners and their animals.
Community Support and Connection
The event was made possible through funding from the California Community Foundation and World Central Kitchen, highlighting the community’s continuous efforts to support those affected by the fires. Big Heart Ranch serves not only as an animal sanctuary but also as a crucial space for recovery and connection, helping participants find solace in their shared experiences.
Final Thoughts: The Circle of Healing
As the sun set over Malibu, Big Heart Ranch stood as a testament to resilience and hope. Both humans and animals found companionship and healing, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, the bonds between us can be profoundly nurturing. “Every animal provides a piece to you that you can’t take away,” Degarmo emphasized, reflecting the enduring power of love and healing in our lives.
