San Joaquin Delta College Women’s Basketball Team Wins Historic State Championship

Introduction

As Women’s History Month unfolds, San Joaquin Delta College has achieved a remarkable milestone—its women’s basketball team has claimed the program’s inaugural state championship. The Mustangs triumphed in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) title game, defeating MiraCosta College with a score of 78-71.

The Championship Journey

Head coach Gina Johnson has been at the helm of the program for an impressive 30 years, making this victory particularly special. Since taking over in 1997, Johnson has dedicated 34 years to coaching at the community college level, also having a background at Foothill College in Los Altos. This championship victory is a testament to her long-standing commitment to the program and its players.

A Comeback Story

During the championship match, the Mustangs faced a daunting challenge, trailing by 20 points in the second quarter. In a pivotal moment, Johnson made a strategic switch to a zone defense, which significantly altered the course of the game. With a gritty determination, the team rallied, showcasing their resilience as they fought back to secure the title. Johnson remarked, “You have to believe… when things don’t go well. You just have to keep pushing, and I really believe that’s what our girls did. They believed.”

Community Support and Celebration

The victory not only signifies a triumph for the team but also serves as a source of pride for the entire San Joaquin Delta College community. Johnson expressed her gratitude, stating, “We’ve been the runner-up before, but to be a champion, so many people from all over the community, all over the school, campus…people from everywhere are congratulatory… and it’s been such a positive thing to happen for San Joaquin Delta College in general.”

Upcoming Celebration Event

To honor this historic accomplishment, a championship banner will be unveiled on Saturday at 5 p.m. during a special campus celebration. This banner will join the college’s 1984 men’s basketball state title banner, marking a significant moment in the school’s athletic history. The event will allow attendees to take photos with family and friends and include an exciting alumni game.

Conclusion

The San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs have not only made history by winning their first state championship, but they have also inspired many with their determination and teamwork. This achievement serves as a testament to the power of belief and community support, reinforcing the legacy of women in sports during a month dedicated to their recognition.
