Access to higher education for rural students has long been plagued by barriers, particularly in transportation and the absence of bilingual support services. In response to these challenges, a new initiative has emerged in Northern California, designed to bridge the gap for bilingual students seeking postsecondary education.

New Pilot Program Launches

This month, three community colleges in Northern California—Butte College, College of the Redwoods, and Lassen College—launched a pilot program aimed specifically at improving access to higher education for bilingual students in rural communities.

Introducing Cali: A Revolutionary AI Tool

At the heart of this initiative is Cali, a “human-centered” AI tool tailored to enhance student support rather than replace it. With the capacity to converse in over 140 languages, Cali assists students in completing key applications such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA). This technology has the potential to minimize errors in applications, ultimately helping students remain on track toward enrollment and graduation.

Increasing Enrollment and Retention Rates

The pilot program aims to boost both enrollment and retention across all stages of the academic journey. Kelly explains that reasons for student drop-off include work obligations, childcare, and life events. Providing a supportive platform like Cali helps remove barriers that often hinder student progress.

Rural colleges frequently face staffing challenges, with fewer personnel to assist students. Utilizing Cali allows institutions to automate responses for approximately 85 to 90 percent of inquiries, freeing staff to engage in high-impact, personalized support. This means that students can receive timely assistance on critical topics like financial aid and course selection.

The AI tool enables colleges to track student feedback effectively, creating a meaningful feedback loop that provides real-time insights into student needs.
