Collaboration for a Sustainable Future: California Community Colleges and AltaSea Partner

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles have united under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at driving climate action, sustainability, and workforce development in California’s burgeoning ‘blue economy.’ This initiative emphasizes economic activities reliant on ocean resources while prioritizing the health of marine ecosystems.

Advancing Climate Goals and Economic Sustainability

Through this partnership, community colleges and AltaSea are committed to fostering awareness and educational pathways in fields such as renewable energy, port decarbonization, and regenerative aquaculture. These sectors are pivotal for California’s climate resilience and economic viability.

In support of these efforts, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors updated the Climate Action and Sustainability Framework in January 2025. This framework is integral to the strategic plan known as Vision 2030, which establishes ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100% below baseline levels by 2035.

Educational and Workforce Development Pathways

California’s community colleges serve as critical agents for preparing students for careers in innovative sectors. Chancellor Sonya Christian emphasized the transformative role these colleges play in aligning educational curricula with the evolving demands of green technologies and emerging economies. By collaborating with AltaSea, community colleges can contribute to impactful research and development efforts in sustainable practices.

The initiative also includes a focus on providing internships and job training opportunities, forming education-to-employment pipelines designed to meet labor market needs effectively.

Global Partnerships and Initiatives

The collaboration extends beyond California’s borders, connecting with AltaSea’s Deep Blue Decade Initiative to engage international efforts targeting ocean-based climate innovation. Joint communications, research initiatives, and student exchange programs will form the backbone of this global outreach.

Terry Tamminen, CEO of AltaSea and former secretary of the California EPA, noted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to scale actionable climate solutions.

The Economic Impact of the Blue Economy

California’s blue economy is a catalyst for job creation and economic growth. Dee Dee Myers, senior advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom, highlighted how modernizing ports through electrification and advancing ocean technology are critical to attracting investments and bolstering California’s leadership in trade and logistics.

Stewart Knox, Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, reiterated that linking climate action with job creation is essential. The partnership aims to equip workers and students with relevant skills for the growing clean energy sector.

Conclusion: A Future-Ready Workforce

As the Port of Los Angeles serves as a hub for climate innovation, the collaboration between the California Community Colleges and AltaSea stands as a blueprint for effective climate action and workforce development. By prioritizing skill-building for resilient careers, this partnership ensures that the largest and most diverse student body in California is prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.

By fostering innovative solutions and providing essential educational pathways, this partnership is paving the way toward a more sustainable and economically vibrant California.
