Tragic Kidnapping and Death of Sikh Community Member in Northern California

The Sikh community in Northern California is mourning the loss of Avtar Singh Bullt, a 57-year-old man kidnapped in broad daylight from Gurdwara Gur Nanak Parkash in Tracy. Authorities have confirmed that Bullt was found deceased after being reported missing on February 17.

Kidnapping Incident

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for three unidentified suspects connected to Bullt’s abduction. Surveillance footage from the day of his disappearance showed a white SUV and individuals in dark clothing interacting with him around 2:30 p.m., suggesting he entered the vehicle against his will.

Timeline of Events

  • February 17, 2023: A missing person report for Avtar Singh Bullt was filed at 8:52 p.m.
  • February 20, 2023: The Napa County Sheriff’s Office discovered a body near Lake Berryessa that matched Bullt’s description. This was later confirmed to be Bullt.

The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to disclose the cause of death.

Community Reaction

The news has deeply affected the Sikh community in Tracy and beyond. Bullt was known as a devoted father and accomplished chef. For approximately 20 years, he had been living in the United States after emigrating from Amritsar, Punjab, India.

Personal Tributes

Community members remember Bullt as a generous individual, often described as a great cook and a helpful neighbor. “He was a great cook, caring, and always helpful,” said Amarjeet Singh, a close family friend. Bullt was not only the head chef but also a volunteer at the gurdwara, where he resided with his wife and three infant children.

Speculations Surrounding the Abduction

Some community members have suggested that the kidnappers might have targeted Bullt by mistake, indicating a possible case of mistaken identity. However, authorities have not confirmed any motive behind the abduction.

Law Enforcement and Justice Efforts

San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow has stated that the investigation is progressing and emphasized the team’s commitment to identifying those responsible for this tragic act. “It is an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community,” he assured during a gathering of Sikh community members.

Collaborative Investigation

District Attorney Ronald J. Freitas has voiced his dedication to ensuring justice for Bullt and his family, confirming that his office is working alongside law enforcement.

Community Support

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page has raised significant funds for Bullt’s family, highlighting his dedication to the community. Described as a beloved sevadaar (serviceman), the page notes Bullt’s humility and the profound impact he had on those around him.

Call for Information

Authorities urge anyone with information related to the kidnapping or death of Avtar Singh Bullt to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for both justice and healing.
