California Launches Initiative to Enhance Community College Scholarship Access

March 10, 2026, Sacramento, CA — In a transformative development aimed at improving college access and affordability, California’s State Treasurer Fiona Ma has unveiled a collaborative initiative involving CalKIDS, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, and the California Cradle-to-Career Data System. This initiative is designed to facilitate community college students in claiming their CalKIDS Scholarships.

The partnership seeks to harness existing student data systems to identify enrolled community college students eligible for available CalKIDS Scholarships. This initiative has successfully pinpointed approximately 40,000 students who collectively have access to around $20 million in scholarship funds. The targeted efforts will promote outreach on campuses, ensuring students are connected with resources that can alleviate their education-related expenses.

What is CalKIDS?

CalKIDS is a statewide scholarship program managed by the ScholarShare Investment Board and chaired by State Treasurer Fiona Ma. The program is designed to broaden college and career training opportunities for public school students in California. Eligible students automatically receive scholarships of up to $1,500, which can be claimed for educational expenses until they turn 26 years old.

Since its inception in 2022, CalKIDS has allocated over $37 million to nearly 70,000 community college students across the state, significantly impacting their educational journey.

Strengthening Access to Financial Resources

“This partnership reflects California’s commitment to ensuring that students can access the opportunities already available to them,” stated Treasurer Fiona Ma. With the collaboration, information regarding CalKIDS participants is securely matched using the California Cradle-to-Career Data System, which contains a robust data-sharing framework with the Chancellor’s Office. The matched reports are accessible to designated college staff through the Data on Demand platform.

This allows community college districts to personalize communication and outreach to students who are eligible for CalKIDS Scholarships, ensuring they are informed about available funds that can support their educational pursuits.

Efficiency Through Collaboration

Mary Ann Bates, Executive Director of the California Cradle-to-Career Data System, emphasized the initiative’s significance, stating, “This collaboration demonstrates the power of connected systems, with Californians at the heart of our shared goals.” The integration of scholarship data into existing support structures within community colleges is expected to enhance affordability initiatives, contributing to student retention and success.

The Impact on Students

The California Community Colleges system serves over 2.2 million students each year, playing a crucial role in promoting economic mobility within the state. Chancellor Sonya Christian remarked, “Imagine what $1,500 from CalKIDS can mean for a first-generation community college student juggling two part-time jobs. It can be the difference between stopping out and staying enrolled.”

This sentiment captures the essence of the initiative, which aligns with Vision 2030, focusing on developing robust partnerships and modern data frameworks to ensure every student benefits from their educational opportunities.

How Students Can Access Their Scholarships

Community college districts are urged to utilize the Data on Demand platform for identifying students with CalKIDS Scholarship eligibility and to conduct targeted outreach through existing communication methods.

Students interested in claiming their CalKIDS Scholarship can visit CalKIDS to verify their eligibility and learn how to access their funds. To claim, students will need their Statewide Student Identifier (SSID), a ten-digit number found on high school transcripts or obtainable by contacting their former high school.
