Cal Community Fuels Football Fundraising Surge

Support and Engagement Soar for Cal Football

The University of California, Berkeley, is on a transformative journey to establish a football program that consistently competes for championships at both the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and national levels. This initiative is led by Chancellor Rich Lyons, Cal football general manager Ron Rivera, and Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi, who collectively envision a sustainable, championship-caliber culture.

Rising Financial Momentum

The recent fundraising efforts, particularly through the Fight For California campaign, have proven immensely successful. During this weeklong event, a matching challenge raised an astounding $2.25 million, spurred by contributions from an anonymous alum and the San Francisco Grid Club. This remarkable response illustrates a strong belief in the future of Cal football.

Beyond this campaign, the program has also secured substantial financial commitments. Key donations include an $11 million anonymous cash gift, a $6.5 million commitment, and multiple $1 million contributions. These investments signify strong backing for Cal football’s vision and future goals.

Investing in Student-Athletes and Program Development

The Cal community’s commitment extends towards creating Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for student-athletes. Significant backing from Cal-affiliated companies has propelled efforts to modernize talent acquisition and roster construction, leading to a top-15 transfer portal recruiting class—ranked second in the ACC.

In just a year, Cal football has escalated its fundraising from $5.2 million last year to an expected $25 million this year, marking a remarkable increase of 381%. These financial advances reflect the passion of the Cal community and signal a pivotal moment for the football program.

Long-Term Goals for Championship Excellence

Rivera has set an ambitious target: raising $100 million over the next three years to solidify the financial foundation necessary for competitive excellence. The goal is to recruit and retain elite student-athletes and coaching staff in a highly competitive landscape.

“Creating a $100 million foundation is about sustained excellence,” Rivera stated. “It’s essential for providing our program with the resources it needs to compete and ultimately bring championships back to Berkeley.”

The Future of Cal Football

Returning as head coach, Lupoi’s appointment is a rallying point for pride and commitment to Cal’s identity and competitive ambitions. His collaboration with Rivera aims to establish the necessary infrastructure for success in the evolving world of college football.

While the early successes are promising, ongoing investment remains critical to ensure that Rivera, Lupoi, and the entire football program possess the resources to maintain their competitive edge. The collective effort of the Cal community, including initiatives like the Calgorithm, has sparked renewed excitement around the Golden Bears football program.

Get Involved

To support Cal football and contribute to its ongoing transformation, consider making a donation or contact Justin DiTolla for partnership opportunities associated with NIL initiatives. More information can be found here or through TheLinkU.

The future is bright for Cal football, and together, the community can contribute to its success and championship aspirations in the years to come.
