Porterville Celebrates Reading: A Legacy of Literacy

On April 11, Veterans Park in Porterville, California, came alive as families gathered to mark the 25th anniversary of Porterville Celebrates Reading. This cherished community event underscores the significance of literacy, offering every child the opportunity to select a free book to enrich their home library.

A Community Commitment to Literacy

Since its inception in 1993, Porterville Celebrates Reading has been a hallmark of the community, gaining formal recognition from the city in 2000. Each year, the event draws families and encourages young readers, emphasizing the vital role that literacy plays in personal and community development.

Leadership That Inspires

Patience Christenson, committee chair since 2022, has been instrumental in continuing this important tradition. A dedicated member of the Porterville Ward in the Porterville California Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she praises the longstanding involvement of local Relief Society sisters in the event. “I am just continuing the legacy started by them,” Christenson explained, acknowledging the foundation laid by previous contributors.

Engage with Literacy in Porterville

Porterville Celebrates Reading not only promotes a love for books but also fosters connections among families and community members. Attendees enjoy various activities while immersing themselves in the joy of reading. This event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to nurture literacy in children.
