Kaiser Permanente Appoints Mike Bowers as President of Northern California Region

OAKLAND, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente has officially appointed Mike Bowers as the new president of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals in Northern California. Bowers, who has served as the interim president since February 2025, has been a key figure overseeing operations across 21 hospitals and 203 medical offices, providing care for approximately 4.6 million members.

Leadership Experience and Achievements

Mike Bowers joined Kaiser Permanente in 2022 as the senior vice president of health plan and hospital operations. During his tenure, the Northern California region made notable strides in enhancing care quality, ensuring patient safety, and improving affordability through an innovative care delivery redesign process. This commitment led to significant accolades, including seven prestigious Beacon Awards from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, highlighting exceptional patient care and a supportive work environment.

Recognition from Peers

Dr. Craig T. Albanese, president of Integrated Care and Coverage at Kaiser Permanente, praised Bowers for his leadership. “Mike’s leadership has strengthened our operational performance and elevated the experience we provide to our members,” he stated. “His proven ability to deliver meaningful results is crucial for our Northern California region’s continued growth and long-term success.”

Background and Qualifications

Bowers brings nearly 30 years of health care leadership experience to his new role. Before joining Kaiser Permanente, he served as the regional chief operating officer for SSM Health covering the St. Louis and Southern Illinois regions. His prior experience also includes leading SSM Health St. Joseph Hospitals in St. Louis and holding various leadership positions at Dignity Health, Community Hospital Corporation, and Memorial Hermann.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and actively participates on multiple community boards. He holds a Master of Health Administration and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston–Clear Lake, along with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh.
