Kaiser Permanente Appoints Mike Bowers as New President of Northern California Operations

OAKLAND, Calif., February 9, 2026 — In a significant leadership move, Kaiser Permanente has officially announced the appointment of Mike Bowers as president of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals in Northern California. Having served as interim president since February 2025, Bowers brings a wealth of experience to this pivotal role.

Exceptional Leadership during Interim Tenure

Since stepping into the interim role, Bowers has effectively managed operations across a vast network that includes 21 hospitals and 203 medical offices. Under his guidance, Kaiser Permanente Northern California serves approximately 4.6 million members, making it a leading health care provider in the region.

Achievements Under Bowers’ Leadership

Bowers has been instrumental in driving improvements in care quality, patient safety, and affordability. His innovative approach to care delivery has not only enhanced operational efficiency but has also garnered national recognition for the organization. Notably, Northern California received seven prestigious Beacon Awards from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, highlighting exceptional patient care and a supportive work environment.

Qualifications and Background

Before joining Kaiser Permanente in 2022 as senior vice president for health plan and hospital operations, Bowers held various leadership roles, including regional chief operating officer for SSM Health in the St. Louis and Southern Illinois areas. His extensive background also includes a tenure at Dignity Health, Community Hospital Corporation, and Memorial Hermann, where he showcased his ability to lead and innovate in the healthcare landscape.

Educational Background

Bowers holds dual Master’s degrees in Health Administration and Business Administration from the University of Houston–Clear Lake, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh. His commitment to the healthcare field is further exemplified by his fellowship with the American College of Healthcare Executives.
