This Quaint Family-Owned Vineyard Is a Hidden Gem in California’s Underrated Wine Region

Although Napa Valley frequently steals the spotlight in discussions about California wine, Paso Robles provides an alternative experience that is both approachable and less crowded. Housing over 200 wineries, this hidden gem is ideal for wine enthusiasts searching for unique expressions, including bold Cabernet Sauvignon and delightful Rhône-style blends.

Nestled in the heart of this vibrant region is the Fulldraw Vineyard, a family-owned winery established in 2012. Set on a stunning 100-acre property, the vineyard’s limestone soil is particularly conducive to Rhône varietals. These grapes—including Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, and Roussanne—are grown around the globe but find a perfect environment in Paso Robles. Visitors can indulge in an array of wine styles, from robust reds to crisp rosés and fragrant whites.

Located in the Templeton Gap, Fulldraw Vineyard offers wine tastings by appointment only. With a pristine five-star rating on Google, patrons frequently commend the welcoming atmosphere and diverse wine selections. One guest even noted that their visit to Fulldraw was the highlight of their entire trip.

If visiting the vineyard isn’t possible at the moment, wine lovers can explore Fulldraw’s website to purchase their exquisite wines online, allowing you to enjoy a taste of Paso Robles from home.

Paso Robles is not only about exceptional wines; it also offers a plethora of activities to enjoy. For those looking to unwind, the area is home to numerous spas that feature natural thermal springs. For just $10, you can access facilities like Franklin Hot Springs, which boasts mineral-rich waters at a relaxing temperature of 100°F. This day pass also includes access to family-friendly lawn games such as cornhole and giant Connect Four.

For retail therapy or vintage finds, head to downtown Paso. It offers a diverse range of boutiques and the renowned Great American Antiques, a sprawling 6,000-square-foot emporium featuring over 500,000 items from various vendors.

Traveling to Paso Robles is convenient, with a driving time of approximately three hours and 15 minutes from either San Francisco or Los Angeles. Additionally, San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is just under 34 miles away. Lodging options abound in downtown, making it an ideal base for wine tastings, shopping, spa visits, and more.

If you’re traveling with an RV, a number of parks in the area offer unique camping experiences, complete with breathtaking views of the rolling hills. Once you’ve experienced Paso Robles, consider visiting other underrated vineyards in California or take a trip to Carmel Valley, a lesser-known wine destination located less than two hours away.
