Final Rainfall of January Brings Mixed Blessings to Northern California

A fast-moving weather system swept through Northern California, likely marking the region’s last significant rainfall for January.

Rainfall Totals in the Valley and Foothills

On Tuesday evening, a band of showers made its way into the Valley. The Sacramento Executive Airport registered 0.10 inches of rain, while higher elevations in the Foothills recorded more substantial amounts. Auburn measured 0.15 inches, but areas like Stockton reported only trace amounts. Notably, Modesto remained completely dry during this weather event.

In the Sierra, the storm contributed to 1-2 inches of snowfall, before exiting into Nevada early Wednesday morning. Many locals woke up to damp roads but little else.

Sacramento’s January Rainfall Summary

This recent rainfall brings Sacramento’s total for January to 2.40 inches, which accounts for about 75% of the average rainfall expected for the month. Thanks to a series of storms late last year, the overall water year is in relatively good condition. Since October 1, the Valley has accumulated 9.67 inches of rain, surpassing the average of 9.13 inches for this time of year.

Snowpack Concerns in the Sierra

Despite the recent rain, warm storm systems have limited snowfall accumulation in the region. As of now, the Northern Sierra snowpack sits at just 44% of the average for this time of year. The situation is slightly better further south, with the Central Sierra recording 61% and the Southern Sierra currently at 77% of normal.

Outlook for February

Looking ahead to February, meteorological forecasts indicate that few and generally weak storms will influence the West Coast. The Climate Prediction Center suggests an abnormally warmer and drier weather pattern for Northern California, at least through the first half of the month.
