Atmospheric River Storm Hits Southern California: Precautionary Evacuation Warnings Issued

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An intense atmospheric river storm has swept through Southern California, leading to precautionary evacuation warnings for residents living near recent wildfire burn areas. This weather event raises concerns about potential flash flooding and mudflows, prompting officials to act swiftly.

Areas Under Evacuation Warnings

Los Angeles County is on high alert, with an official interactive map detailing the areas affected. Key locations include:

  • Canyon
  • Bethany
  • Palisades
  • Eaton
  • Hurst
  • Kenneth
  • Sunset
  • Lidia
  • Franklin
  • Bridge

Residents are encouraged to view the map for a comprehensive understanding of their proximity to the impacted regions. For further details, check the interactive evacuation map.

Preparedness Recommendations

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for residents, particularly those in vulnerable areas, to take immediate precautions. The potential impacts include:

  • Debris flows in burn areas
  • Significant water accumulation on roads and highways
  • Mudslides in canyons
  • Risk of fallen trees

The city of Los Angeles has implemented an evacuation warning effective from 6 PM Thursday until 11 AM Sunday for areas near the Palisades, Hurst, and Sunset fire burn zones. Meanwhile, evacuations are also advised for areas close to the Eaton Fire in Altadena.

Storm Activation and Flood Watch

The Emergency Operations Center in Los Angeles is scheduled to activate at 6 PM Thursday. Furthermore, the National Weather Service has declared a flood watch that will be in effect from late Friday night through Saturday evening across all of Los Angeles County, and large portions of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties are included in this watch.

Resources for Residents

Residents seeking information about potential mudflows can reach the L.A. County Mudflow Advice Hotline at (800) 933-0930. Additionally, for tips on how to prepare for storms, sheriff’s officials recommend visiting L.A. County Ready.
